I was suprised by this anime in more ways than one. First of all, the story is very well written. This isn´t your typical fantasy anime. Sure, there is action, but there is also politics and social commentary etc. That must be boring you say. But it really isn´t :) It´s actually quite ironic how they show this Demon King(technically it should be Demon Queen, but that´s a minor nitpick) to be this agent of progress who want to help and make things better. Speaking of which, in a refreshing change of style, this fantasy anime, despite it´s battles as previously mentioned, has a message of peace and prosperity. They also show a different more three-dimensional side of demons in fantasy. Last but not least(I could go on indefinitely, but I don´t want to turn this review into an essay), some people might argue that the character names are lazy and unoriginal, but I am actually under the impression that it is a very clever parody of the archetypal characters that can and frequently appear in classic fantasy :) (show less)

This is essentially Spice and Wolf with demons. Both take place in a medieval fantasy setting, focus on romance between the two leads, revolve around economics and have funny dialogue and character interaction. And I won't complain about that, since I loved Spice and Wolf. Maoyuu Maou Yuusha is a good series in its own right. You don't feel as if the plot is trying too hard to impress you or hold your attention. The Demon Queen and the Hero have an adorable romance developing and there's a great story in this anime, too.
