Summary: After losing their mother, Alphonse and Edward Elric attempt to bring her back using the forbidden science of human alchemy. However, alchemy operates on the theory of equivalent trade, and breaking the human alchemy taboo carries a heavy price. Ed loses his leg, and Al loses his body. Ed is able to seal Al's soul inside of a huge suit of armor, at the cost of his arm. Years later, Ed (now with two mechanical limbs) and Al (still trapped in the armor) leave their childhood home, each brother concerned with the other's happiness. Ed, who has a natural talent and skill for alchemy, becomes nationally certified and is soon known everywhere as the "Fullmetal Alchemist." Their true objective is to search for any information on the fabled Philosopher's Stone, hoping it will allow them to regain their old bodies. All of their hopes rest with this mythical stone, which may not even exist at all. However, the brothers soon learn that they are not the only ones after the powerful stone.

Compared to FMA Brotherhood this alternative 2nd half was too chaotic and confusing. Despite great the action being well done, the finale of this series is rather dumb...

pros
+ good concept with interesting characters & development
+ good voice acting, hd design, and well-selected op/ed pieces
+ good story with drama, emotion, psychology, action, comedy
cons
- story differs from the manga alot and the end may just drive you up the wall
- doesn't go into depth concerning e.g. 'the father'
- dialogue isn't quite amazing

conclusion: so you might need a bit of patience on this one as it does differ from the manga. e.g. it spends a lot of time talking about politics rather than on the mc's and their cause. (read more)

Even though this anime is very entertaining and will give you some epic story. I STILL advise you watch the latter anime BROTHERHOOD instead. This actually follows the story of the manga and has an even better storyline, also goes into depth behind "The Father".

^^

As stated in the title this anime is really good for people who haven't read the manga it has a very good story and interesting characters however I didn't find the dialogue to be amazing and the series didn't really entertain me as much as the mange did.

And although I didn't mean this review to turn out this way I know that I'm going to end up comparing FMA to FMAB. Because I honestly just think that FMAB is an improved version of FMA I loved absolutely everything about FMAB I even loved how bad ass and creepy and evil the villains were (read more)

I was dissapointed in the story. The anime took a completely different direction than the manga did. In the manga there was no such thing of that 'theif chick' or whatever she was called. at the beggining it went by the manga then it slowly just took off. But don't let this review let you down! If you haven't read the manga your sure to love it :)

I've actually have about half of this series on DVD. For an anime from that particular time, the animation is very high quality and is pretty standard through the story (well at least the half I've seen).

Sure, it probably isn't as awesome or source-material-following as the first one, but it isn't bad. It is interesting and a pleasant watch.

Like the source it was based on, it has a solid story that is filled with plot turns and unearthing a mystery. The fact that the mystery has a deadline in order to prevent massive casualties is an (read more)

The anime had its good parts but the charactics of the main characters irated me after awhile. One to whiny I don't care if your in a metal suit and the other needed to let the height thing go. The animation was good so I stayed with it and the ending for me and my friend watching it was what the ? Didn't care for it at all.
