Based on the manga of the same name, Akira is set in futuristic and post-war city, Neo-Tokyo, in 2019. On July 16, 1988, Tokyo is destroyed by an apparent nuclear explosion that leads to the start of World War III. Thirty-one years later, in 2019, Neo-Tokyo, a new megalopolis built on an artificial island in Tokyo Bay, is gripped by political strife, anti-government terrorism, and gang violence. Shotaro Kaneda leads his bosozoku gang, the Capsules, which find themselves in a gang war with another group called the Clowns. As Kaneda and his best friend, Tetsuo, battle a pair of Clowns on a highway, the latter almost runs into a child with wizened features and is injured when his bike suddenly explodes. Tetsuo and the child, Takashi, are taken away by armed soldiers. Kaneda and his gang are taken in for questioning, where Kaneda unsuccessfully flirts with a young woman named Kei, a member of the terrorist Resistance. Kaneda, Kei, and the remaining Capsules are later released. Two members of a secret government project, discover that Tetsuo possesses mental frequencies similar to Akira, a little boy with essentially god-like mental abilities who destroyed Tokyo decades before. Because Kiyoko, another one of the magic old man children called the Espers, has had visions of a similar destruction of Neo-Tokyo, the Colonel orders the Doctor to kill Tetsuo should he go out of control. Tetsuo escapes, meeting up with his girlfriend, Kaori, and stealing Kaneda's motorcycle |

I'm a big fan of the Akira Manga. The movie really was more of a side story, it hints at all the back story, but doesn't really go into depth of the psychological aspects of the story. The gritty animation certainly fits, but without the backstory it feels mostly like a gorefest.

This anime movie seriously kicksass. I didn't think that when i started to watch it but later on it became clear that I must review this movie! If you are looking for some real nice atmospherical anime then here it is. The movie itself has the potential to compete against even whole series and do well. I encourage you to watch it if you havent already because you are missing out on alot of epicness.

What is to be said about Akira? This is one of the first anime titles I ever saw and a great title to watch if you have never seen any anime.
First off the story is solid however the down side is that none on the other volumes of the story line have been converted into an animated format. The dialogue is never lacking nor repetitive. When the animation is brought up you must take into consideration when this movie ( read more)

First off the story is solid however the down side is that none on the other volumes of the story line have been converted into an animated format. The dialogue is never lacking nor repetitive. When the animation is brought up you must take into consideration when this movie was made and for its time and even compared to many titles released since Akira is a beautiful and well stylized film. Lastly the entertainment value of this movie is high what with it being a full length feature.
If you have never watched anything this is a great anime to begin with and may make anyone who looks at anime as "Oh, cartoons are for children". Akira is what anime is all about. ( show less)

Although some might call this anime old, and not worth mentioning by today's standards I strongly disagree. This is an anime with a plot and story that makes you think hard about what life could be like in the future. With it's animation style and imagery based on classic manga, it's both appealing to the eyes but at the same time not overly produced with special effects that it distracts a person from the dialogue and the flow of the movie. People who are used to modernised anime with CGI effects can still watch this film and appreciate how anime films were made before technical advancements. Imagery aside, the theme of the movie aspires in us a thought of what life could possibly hold if the events in the film were to actually happen. The relationships between the characters are vast and don't stick to one form. There is angst, love and hatred especially when it comes to the gang violence. There is a huge psychological aspect of this film too as the context of the anime is based on the psychosis of Akira and Tsetsuo. At the end of the day a person could watch this anime more than once and still be able to relate to it. ( show less)

Definitely high-class in terms of animation and storyline. Anyone who says it's outdated or cheesy must be pretty shallow. Sure, they didn't have computer effects like we see nowadays, but the attention to detail and careful unfolding of the deep plot are excellent. I understand after watching it why the makers of The Matrix revered and referenced it; there are some similarities in theme and plot between the two. As the others said, a must-watch for any serious anime fan. ( show less)

A good story for it's day, and still a good one despite being a tad dated and not as futuristic as first intended. Somewhat confusing, and definitely a movie that has to be seen at least twice to gain the full impact of the story. It is definitely worth a few viewings, as you catch more things that you missed previously.

While this anime might be a little old, it still is great. The story is something that draws you in and takes you on a great ride. Even with it being old, the animation is still top notch. I would say that this is one is a MUST for all anime fans. This is one of the corner stones that help put anime out there to the public.
