Summary: |
Michiru Kita is a special girl who possesses Shinigami Eyes, which allows her to see a dark ring around a person's neck. This ring symbolizes the person's impending death; once they are marked to die, a gray line, which is invisible to normal people, appears on their neck, and once the ring turns completely black, the person dies. Chika Akatsuki and Shito Tachibana, two boys in her class, both have black rings around their necks, but to her surprise, they are not yet dead. It is revealed that after a tragic accident that was supposed to kill them both, the two boys made a deal with a secret loan office called the Zombie-Loan. In return for keeping them alive, the two have to hunt zombies for the loan office. When Michiru gets involved with them, she finds that her life has just become more complicated. |

I'll admit, I downloaded this at first solely for the zombie title. As it turns out, this was pretty good.
I've been watching anime long enough that the same, tired stereotypes are getting bothersome. While the first episode was decent, I was worried it would end up being painfully overly full of the typical types. Shy, glasses-toting girl who can't stand up for herself, pretty boy, and the energetic loud mouth who all reluctantly team up. The concept at first seems typical, but it is anything but. The "heroes" coldly discuss killing the heroine who has stumbled upon their secret. While it treads on commonly used themes, the characters or dialogue will make you forget that. That, or the fan service. Oooh, the fan service. It wouldn't turn off viewers who dislike such things, as its usually brief (open shirted boy here, yuri there) and doesn't hold up the story or seem out of place. There are two scenes which might not be the best to show to younger viewers.
While it isn't as violent as I would have liked it to be, the plot unfolded nicely in each episode and there were, to me, a lot of humorous moments. The characters grow with each episode, although with Shito and Chika, sometimes it's more like a step forward and a few steps back. At the end of the original eleven episodes, the series does seem to abruptly drop off, but with or without the dvd-released final two episodes it isn't a deal breaker and leaves you mostly satisfied. Follow up with the manga if needs be. (Also, the opening theme is pretty great, if you're a fan of rock.)
All in all, this series is well worth the time taken to download and watch it. If you like zombies, humor, and interesting characters, you'll like this anime. Stick with it, and you won't be disappointed.
