Tokyo Ravens was something I picked up on a whim, but I have to confess that it far exceeded my expectations. The story starts off slow, and for those who are not familiar with Japanese history and folklore, some parts of the show may be confusing. The story basically revolves around the Tsuchimikados, an ancient family descended from Abe no Seimei, the celebrated legendary onmyouji of the Heian Era. The story is set in a modern age whereby Onmyoudo, a form of Japanese sorcery is commonplace and widely-used, and the man responsible for it all, missing.
The main protagonist of Tokyo Ravens, Tsuchimikado Harutora, is an easy-going and carefree person who strives to live his life as simply as possible due to the fact that he was born without Spirit Sight, a basic ability required to see Spiritual Energy, and therefore use Onmyoudo. Despite all this, he eventually fulfils a promise to Tsuchimikado Natsume, a childhood friend to be her Shikigami (familiar) and confronts his destiny head on.
I loved this show for the characters, the action and the excellent storyline. One very admirable and notable aspect of Tokyo Ravens is how they portray Onmyoudo, and is a must-watch for fans of fantasy themes. The character development is also nicely paced, and the show explores their personality, interactions and feelings very well. The music and dialogue also combine to create a very nice atmosphere for the setting, and is something I really think is noteworthy. All-in-all, if you're a fan of action, suspense, fantasy, romance and comedy, this is your cup of tea. Tokyo Ravens was definitely one of the best of them I've watched in awhile, and while I think they could have worked a bit more on the ending, I can say that this series left me satisfied with what I already have and wanting more. Definitely one of the best anime of 2013, and I really do think you're missing out if you pass on this. Give this a try, I did, and it was one of the best decisions of my life, and it could be the same for you, cheers :)
