In the past I also thought it was awful--the characters were ugly, legs long, weird drawings and an awful story. But I started to rewatch it maybe for like the 3rd time and when I finally decided to just force myself to watch it I started to get hooked onto the characters (especially Luffy--a funny, mysterious person--sometimes says things that are smart, which is opposite of his normal idiotic personality) just see how it is. The anime isn't the best but it is good
