Summary:
"Henrietta" was an innocent little girl when her entire family was massacred and she was left for dead. She was rescued by a privately-owned social welfare organization and given cybernetic components over her battered body. Brainwashed by the organization, she and four other girls now work as cold-blooded assassins, doing the dirty work for the Italian government.
Gunslinger Girl is an anime that I watched when I was getting into anime for the first time. The premise of the show is simple enough, but the intricacies of the politics and the subtleties of the themes that are introduced makes this an outstanding series to watch. The character animation and backgrounds are excellent and rich in detail as are the weapons that the characters wield. There are no clear-cut villains in this series, no black and white, "there it the bad guy, here is the good guy" sort of thing. I guess from a certain standpoint, all the adults look like "bad guys" as they use their ideologies to justifiy their despicable actions and force the consequences onto the children who they objectify as mere weapons.
What I LIKE about Gunslinger Girl:
+No cardboard cut-out characters. Characters are well developed and their motivations are complex.
+Emotional scenes are well directed and the audience will sympathize with the plight of the children.
+Excellent artwork and background music. The rich artistry enhances the mood of the series, consistent quality.
What I DISLIKE about Gunslinger Girl:
- ... ... (Nothing ^_^)
Summary:
Gunslinger Girl is not going to be everyone's cup of tea. There is no comedy or comic relief. The mood of the entire series is dramatic and tragic, not a light and fluffy moe-fest.
