The Sengoku era gave birth to many historical legends. One of them is Naoe Kanetsuku, the brilliant military general of the Uesugi family. Together with Maeda Keiji, a legendary warrior on the battlefield, who become lifelong friends with each other, they carve out a piece of history in the most dangerous and volatile time in Japan’s history. The two men recall their beginnings and the journey they took to get to the accomplished position they now sit at. |

I've been stating over and over that comedies focus on dialogue rather than on story. Latest here we've got the proof that normal anime don't need to run on story, either. Gifuu Doudou!! never had the most interesting setup, but hey, it's Sengoku, so even if there's a lot of reminiscing, there should be time for some flashy battles and entertainment at least from those. Right? Well, nope.
So far, Gifuu Doudou!! looks like an attempt at creating a more mythical, 'manly' version of Sengoku-era history. And if you ask me, it fails hard. The story is clichéd, and far too predictable; the characters are way obvious as well, in the sense that the good ones are sculpted like Greek gods and the antagonists have warts on their noses (literally). And as if that wasn't enough, the dialogue is just full of clichés. The entire anime so far is so over-the-top clichéd it's totally inept and almost hilarious again. The only thing I can't really complain about is the animation. It's up to date, and except the ridiculously huge battle auras, I haven't been able to spot bugs. Sword moves are flashy enough to be entertaining, too. For me, though, that's pretty much the only merit this anime has. It's nothing to go for if you can't stand the corny stuff, and I don't mean the bits of popcorn you automatically get with the majority of shoujo anime. Even the Sengoku Era flashy action can't save Gifuu Doudou!!. It's so ridiculous I was laughing throughout the first half episode and actually ended up falling from the sofa. It wasn't the kind of laughing that made me crave more, though.
I'm skipping through the episodes now. The action may be halfway entertaining, even if predictable. However, there's not that much of it, and the entire rest is ridiculously obvious and overused. For me, so far below average it's not funny anymore... though the clichés were, at the beginning.
1.5/10 from me.
