Summary: |
Two brothers lose their mother to an incurable disease. With the power of "alchemy", they use taboo knowledge to resurrect her. The process fails, and as a toll for using this type of alchemy, the older brother, Edward Elric loses his left leg while the younger brother, Alphonse Elric loses his entire body. To save his brother, Edward sacrifices his right arm and is able to affix his brother's soul to a suit of armor. With the help of a family friend, Edward receives metal limbs - "automail" - to replace his lost ones. With that, Edward vows to search for the Philosopher's Stone to return the brothers to their original bodies, even if it means becoming a "State Alchemist", one who uses his/her alchemy for the military.

Hmm, how can i state my pleasure of watching FMA:B, simply put it was an enjoyable thrill ride with lots of ups and hardly (if any) lows. To put it simply, the original FMA didnt follow the manga story as the manga was still new so the animation studio came up with their own story and twists, which in itself was highly enjoyable.
FMA:B IS NOT A SEQUEL its a retelling of what was supposed to happen in the original and for that reason it is WAY different from its predecessor. It basically recalls events up to episode 10-15 where those who watched the original one would be familiar and yes Hughes dies in this one too (sniff, sniff).
The Story (Plot):
Ok well i cant say what the plot is without spoiling it for those who've yet to watch the show, but let me tell you this it takes a lot of twists you would not expect and all of them are done to perfection, trust me you 'll be enthralled by it. Its not your average 'I wanna protect every one' type of story that gets super boring really quick like most other anime (yes Bleach im speaking about you). There are a lot of moral decisions in this one.
Character Development:
The character development was nicely done introducing new characters and fleshing out interesting tidbits of their past without it feeling like a history lesson or being too convoluted. Each character has a bit of something that you actually wanna know about and its this little attention to detail that gives this series the edge over the others.
Animation:
Done to perfection, scenes are never repeated (at least i haven't found any). Every scene feels brilliantly crafted and animated with nothing giving off the impression of being cheap. They could've reused scenes from the first FMA to use a flash backs but they chose not to instead use fresh scenes for the flashback moments. The fight scenes are totally awesome, there are a lot of top 10 fight scenes in FMA:B involving (ahem the Fu... oh right no spoilers). The production levels must be through the roof as there are a lot of great scenes. There's a lot of OMGs & WTFs that accompany almost every scene.
Blood & Deaths:
Wow blood & gore has its own category, hey why not its my review. Yup its got B+D from the first episode onwards, yup the first one. There's a lot of blood in this one yes A LOT of it too. Unlike own this one has a sh!tload of people dying (well the philosopher's stone is made out of live humans after all). The thing i really like about FMA:B is that when someone dies you actually feel sorry to an extent as you built a relationship with their existence, yup even for the bad guys (well some of them at least) which makes FMA stand out in the crowd of similar anime
Emotion:
This is one emotional anime as it possess all most every emotion in it. Humour is off the hook on this one especially scenes with Ed, Alphonse Mustang, Hughes or Armstrong. There's a lot of crying in this retelling but its not the cheap nonsensical annoying crying which makes no sense, when a character cries its for a good reason (poor Winry). Anger yup and a lot of it. Revenge, yup, this is one of the best emotion showed here as it often leads to an awesome fight scene mentioned above plus more.
Conclusion:
FMA:B is a brilliant anime that deserves its place among the greats of the past as it does everything correct with few upsets and it is well worth watch. Its a perfect 9.5 - 10 (nothing ever gets the 10).
