I've been watching Fairy Tail sense the anime was released, and I have to say, I really love it.
Most animes like Fairy Tail (DBZ, One Piece, Naruto, Bleach) have MASSIVE arcs that span around 60 episodes or so. Fairy Tail on the other hand has arcs around 12 episodes long. Its great. Battles rarely last more than an episode, so they don't get boring and dragged out. Some may think "Well short arcs must mean the story is boring"
No. The short arcs are all related in some way to another. There are several major elements to the storyline that get built up and revealed with each arc and continue to grow and raise new questions. Arcs may appear random at times, but as you watch, you'll see how they tie into things.
Another great thing about it is the build up. The amount of emotion the characters convey for their beliefs, friends, and their guild is amazing and very well done. There are so many times characters will get my heart pounding just because they are giving powerful speeches with such emotion and it really amps up the anime. Not to mention the great fight scenes and great music that help you feel even more connected.
Finally, the characters themselves are great. Fairy Tail has TONS of characters, but only a small select few are shown as main characters. So its not like Bleach where its littered with tons of characters that randomly will get tons of focus on them as if they were main characters. Its more like DBZ, where you see the main characters, and then side characters that come in from time to time for a bit of story.
And the best part of all is you don't get that problem that a lot of animes like this get where the main character becomes insanely over powered and the other main characters start to become pointless. All the characters in Fairy Tail are great at holding their own alongside the main character at many times, and some are even stronger at times. A lot of it depends on what type of opponents are being fought.
Anyways, this anime really does deserve a chance. The humor in it is great alone, but this anime has a ton of heart. It'll get your blood pumping just by seeing how real the characters emotions feel at times.
