This story takes place in England after World War I. After the death of his grandfather, Hugh Anthony Disward, also known as Huey, receives a mysterious key and according to his will, must take custody of the Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian in order to inherit his estate and all his possessions. Upon meeting Dalian, a child living at the estate, he learns that she is the guardian of the Archives which contain forbidden knowledge stored in thousands of magic books called "Phantom Books" (幻書 gensho?). Upon agreeing to become Dalian's new Keykeeper, Huey joins her into investigating incidents regarding people misusing the power of the Phantom Books, most of them with tragic consequences, and using his power as Keykeeper to seal the power of the Phantom Books and restore order to the area. |

An anime based off the light novel and for anyone interested there is also a manga adaptation for the light novel as well.
The animation is beautiful, colourful and smooth. Fight scenes are well depicted and moments of happiness, comedy, tension and sadness are captured within the motion, lighting and colour.
The amount of frequent characters is around 8 people making them easy to remember and the two main characters are a good combination for the comedy that comes with them.
For anyone who's seen Mushishi the anime storyline is structured in a similar sort of way. Lots of short stories that don't necessarily link together and the last episode is usually something very close and personal to the main character or reveals something about the character.
The downfall of this anime is the length. Its too short to sufficiently introduce all the characters properly. And caused a bit of a rushed ending unfortunately. Had the anime been a bit longer the story would have a more resolved feeling to it and the "frequent" characters introduced only two episodes before the final would get a bigger role to play. At least it would have given the audience more of a chance to get to know the characters rather than have them just all show up in the last episode.
All in all it is a fantastic anime I'd recommend to anyone interested in an adventurous sort of mystery or a historical anime that takes place around the ending of the first world war (No knowledge of this time is really needed). It has some action but not much, so for action lovers this isn't exactly your particular anime. There is comedy scattered throughout the series nothing overly hilarious but it is there.
