Ok, so they chose not to follow the manga to the letter. That's fine I guess, only they added some silly little stories here and there that don't really add anything to the main plot which originally had a nice flow to it and a coherent sequence of events. The anime kind of ruins that with those little additions. But it's always fun to see characters you love come to life so I don't regret having started this series. I haven't finished it yet, but I hope they stick more to the story later on, especially the part with Kanda's past. Though he's by no means my favorite character, that part ties things together very nicely and ads a very touching story to boot. The manga is still more exciting and attractive in my opinion, especially when it comes to the artwork. It's a shame because the manga was quite unique and original, but as an anime it loses that special something which set it apart from other series. But if you haven't read the manga, you'll enjoy it for what it is. It has a bit of everything: fighting, fantasy, and good humor. So yeah, watch it. But fans of the manga beware.
